Bob Bradley has been relieved of his duties of head coach of the United States men’s team, U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati announced on Thursday.
“It is always hard to make these decisions, especially when it involves someone we respect as much as Bob. We wish him the best in his future endeavors,” Gulati said in a statement.
Bradley took over the coaching job after a disappointing 2006 World Cup. He had been the manager at Chivas USA in MLS before taking the job.
The one-time Princeton star led the United States to some of it’s best moments in the sport, winning the 2007 Gold Cup to qualify for the Confederations Cup in South Africa, where they shocked the world and beat Spain in 2009.
But a disappointing performance in South Africa in 2010 had some people calling for his ouster. Bradley was kept on, signing an extension to keep him with the men’s team until 2014.
This summer, the team lost the Gold Cup to Mexico.
